New feature: earth.nullschool.net is now using WebGL to smoothly render globe rotations. This is a fairly tricky technology to use. Only 80% of devices support WebGL, and there are many slight differences in compatibility. So if you see any strange graphical glitches, a bug report sent to this page would be greatly appreciated! Last week, earth.nullschool.net had its 5 year launch anniversary. To celebrate, there's now a date selector dialog to quickly jump back in time to see historical wind data. It's all there, every three hour step at every pressure level, since launch on Dec 9, 2013. Other data sources (like particulates and chemistry layers) were added over the years, so they don't go all the way back to 2013. But all data has been kept and is now easily accessible. Have fun! Wildfires 🔥 are detected by satellites several times per day, globally. When conditions are right, we can see fires in astonishing detail, all the way down to individual fire fronts and their intensities. earth.nullschool.net now shows these wildfires. This video is what Siberia looked like yesterday. The fires are detected by VIIRS, an instrument on the NOAA-20 and Suomi-NPP satellites. Happy New Year! This animation shows a full, one year time lapse animation of surface winds from Jan 1, 2018 until Jan 1, 2019. The data come from the National Weather Service's GFS numerical weather model (https://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/index.php?branch=GFS). Blue colors represent slower winds. Greens and yellows are faster winds. Streamlines show the direction of the wind in each frame of the animation. This animation took 48 hours to render as 3,000 individual frames encoded to video.
